Code Red by Ian Loome

A seemingly washed-up Special Operator is awakened from a decade-long inebriated stupor, when events from his past return and threaten the life of an innocent teenager and a nurse; the only person who treated him like a human being.

Dragged back into a life he had long-since left behind, they forced him to employ skills he vowed never again to use.

Chased by the government, law enforcement and, mercenaries, Bob Singleton risks everything to save the innocents, while attempting to uncover the source of a leak that resulted in the death of his teammates.

This was a pulse-pounding ride from start to finish. Ian Loome painted the perfect picture of a tormented warrior, punishing himself for perceived missteps and errors in judgement.

The emotions of each character, both good and evil, are thoroughly examined, allowing you to empathise with even the vilest of acts.

This was an excellent read.

This work gave an extensive look at espionage, covert ops and private military contractors, plus the effect of little to no oversight.

There were a few repetitive phrases in this title; however, as an author myself, I am quite aware of the inescapable habit of over-using your favourite sequence of words.

In the words of William Faulkner, you must “kill all your darlings”; remove unnecessary characters, storylines or sentences. This is easier said than done.

If you’re looking for an action-packed, character-driven thriller, this book is perfect.
